UNY I-Corps Regional Course Hosted By University of Rochester

From the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship

The University of Rochester is once again offering the NSF Innovation-Corps (I-Corps) Upstate NY Node Short Course program in a new 3.5-week virtual format and designed for graduate, doctoral candidates, post-docs and faculty in STEM-related fields to explore the market opportunity of their research. Undergrads are welcome to apply if they have a deep technology and are working with a faculty member. The next UR Short Course, offered free of charge, will take place via Zoom, beginning on Monday, October 19. This fall’s cohort is eligible for grant awards of up to $2,000 per team. Register here.

UR Ventures: Technology Development Fund

The Technology Development Fund accelerates the commercialization of the University of Rochester's world-class research. The TDF makes awards to UR researchers as they develop their innovations to get them ready for the marketplace. TDF awards are not prizes or research grants, but are funds to accomplish specific milestones. Since 2010, TDF support has provided over $4m to 49 projects, resulting in 30+ publications, over $7m in additional research funding, 8 licenses/options and several startups.

Luminate Finals 2020

"Luminate Finals 2020 was streamed internationally on Monday, September 14 as part of The Optical Society‘s all-virtual Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO+LS) APS/DLS conference. The event marked the graduation of the ten startups in Luminate’s third cohort — startups changing the way we address healthcare diagnosis and training, water and soil monitoring, wireless communication, energy efficiency, and more."

Embedded Vision: An Overview [Webinar]

Embedded vision is an emerging and growing technology with use cases developing across many fields, from medical imaging to autonomous vehicles. Fundamentally, embedded vision is the integration of vision acquisition and processing directly into machines and even consumer devices. The term “embedded vision,” though, has been used to describe a wide variety of technologies and implementations.

In this webinar, industry expert David Dechow will define embedded vision and the technologies involved, the basic implementation challenges and techniques, and the impact that embedded vision will have on familiar markets, including, in particular, machine vision in automation applications. The webinar will feature examples and case studies and include a question-and-answer session.

In Pursuit of a Better Test

University scientists are adapting existing research to develop tests to detect and improve our understanding of COVID-19. CEIS partners, Benjamin Miller and James McGrath are currently developing better COVID-19 testing strategies. Miller's lab is developing tiny sensor chips that use coronavirus proteins to quickly detect the presence of coronavirus antibodies that humans develop within two days of exposure to the virus. McGrath is using ultrathin membranes to determine whether individuals have been infected with COVID-19. McGrath is eyeing an inexpensive testing device that could be used in low-resource communities around the world.

The Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund Open Competition

FuzeHub’s $400,000 Commercialization Competition, a part of the Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund, is scheduled for November 18-19 2020. The two day event in Albany will involve a pitch competition showcasing the innovative early stage of different companies, panel discussions and different networking opportunities. Call for Proposals for the Collaborative Innovative Research (CIR)

Our CIR program provides matching funds for company-sponsored research on campus has released its annual Call for Proposals for the 2020-2021 program year. The submission deadline is May 22nd, 2020 for projects that commence on July 1st 2020 subject to the availability of funds. Faculty members of the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology and other regional universities are invited to apply. Look for instructions and the forms on the CEIS website. Come join us Thursday April 23rd for the 20th annual technology showcase event co-sponsored by CEIS and the Center of Excellence in Data Science at the University of Rochester. Please note the change of venue: RIT Inn & Conference Center 5257 West Henrietta Rd West Henrietta NY 14467.

In addition to the opening plenary session, there is a poster session representing a portion of the high quality research conducted at the U of R and RIT. This event provides an opportunity for members of the business and academic communities to meet and discuss topics of mutual interest. We hope that discussions will lead to collaborations that will enable companies to tap into the wealth of technology and expertise available at our institutions of higher education to create regional job growth and economic expansion. Event is open to the public. Refreshments available.
